Centre of excellence for security solutions
Throughout the whole system engineering lifecycle, the System Design Centre works with customers and other EADS units on defence and security solutions like

  • urban and peace-keeping operations
  • protection of borders, critical, infrastructure, large events
  • net-centric operations in the battlefield
  • intelligence
  • maritime and airspace surveillance
  • air traffic management

Partner of the customer
Risk mitigation, technology capitalisation and a system-of-systems "integrated project team" working approach are key success factors offered by the System Design Centre. This integrated team of specialists from customer and industry side can rely on the System Design Centre's skills, methodologies, tools, processes and standards needed for system design, modelling, test and evaluation of system architecture, as well as of operational concepts. Furthermore, the portfolio includes operational and tactical training including hardware and man-in-the-loop. An integrated team of technical and operational experts along with systems architects and modelling specialists, the System Design Centre can rely on a competent operative consulting team. These so-called "Operational Advisers" come from the military and security world and link the system engineering skills with operational experience and reality. They work shoulder-to-shoulder with the customers and the system engineers on operational aspects.

Virtual Manoeuvres Improving Efficiency and Reducing Risk. Thanks to the System Design Centre's operational experts, system engineering skills, methods and tools, it is possible to set up, test and evaluate security systems in various scenarios before they are actually used. Thus, security concepts can be designed, tested and optimised in advance, and all those involved can be trained for their specific tasks.

The Integrated Project Support Environment (IPSE) is an advanced method for the engineering of large systems. Combined with the powerful net-centric operations simulation environment, it facilitates planning and design, mitigates risks and saves time. A virtual reality is created. Responses to emergencies can be rehearsed before they happen – invaluable when it comes to devising peacekeeping and defence concepts.

The System Design Centre also supports the development and implementation of large complex systems such as border protection or air traffic management systems. It brings together professionals in various fields who can provide clients with expert advice, combining their technological and operative know- how with innovative methods and tools.

The scenario shows the setup for a successful peacekeeping mission – all the most important areas have been secured: the airport, the port, strategic parts of the city, a refugee camp, an oil rig and also the global airspace. The commander of the command post has access to all the important information and has everything under control. This complex scenario is the result of many hours of collaborative work in integrated teams regarding operational concept, command and control, technical solutions, and decision-making process, including various stakeholders from multi-national bodies.

Designing Sustainable Security Close partnership with customers and end users
The first step in the design phase is a dialogue with customers and end users about the objectives, technical and operational requirements as well as about the available components and subsystems. During the planning phase, the system engineers, operational advisers and the client meet regularly to define the specifications.

Virtual manoeuvres in the simulated environment allow experts to evaluate design options and to detect strengths and weaknesses. These cyber scenarios provide insights into the future system, the interoperability of subsystems and components as well as the efficiency of the concepts of operation (CONOPS). Thus, adaptations and alignments of the system or the CONOPS can be performed in early stages. The System Design Centre's expertise in engineering of large systems is available to the client throughout the entire life cycle of the complex security projects. The system architects, the operational advisers as well as tools and methods like the Integrated Support Environment (IPSE) are not only available for development and use, but also system extensions.

The power of networked simulation and integration centres
The simulation environment of the System Design Centre for Net-Centric Operations Simulation encompasses various fixed and a mobile platform. It federates and simulates the most advanced as well as legacy systems, the digital models of major platform and system manufacturers. Interactive scenarios are thus generated in order to evaluate the performance and interoperability of existing and future capabilities (UAVs, combat aircraft, ships, missiles, etc.) in a network-centric architecture. Its open architecture gives the ability to interconnect the existing simulation capabilities of customers, industrial partners and in-house entities. In addition, a Net-Centric Operations Simulation mobile platform is available for on-the-field experiments, computer-aided exercises, or use at joint-venture or customer facilities.

Understand and prepare the future
In collaboration with the customer, the System Design Centre works today on the customers' needs of tomorrow. Experienced operational advisers and highly qualified system engineers investigate and evaluate how the customer can benefit from the improvement in technology and science. Through concept studies and technological demonstrators, the System Design Centre is exploring new security domains. New urban operations, joint interoperability or demonstrators for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) are just a few examples.
